This year I have been teaching or tutoring, both face to face and online:
- IB English Literature and Language courses, at SL and HL
- 11+ English (School Entrance Exams)
- 13+ English (ISEB Common Entrance)
- GCSE and IGCSE English (various courses)
- 16+ School Entrance
- A-level and IB Diploma English
- Current affairs to a post-graduate student
In the past twelve months my students have gained entry to the best UK schools, including St Paul's and Wycombe Abbey.
Since qualifying as a teacher from the Institute of Education, UCL, in 2004 I've worked hard to gain experience across the broadest range of school sectors. I understand the global nature of the modern classroom and relish the opportunity to work with students of diverse languages and cultures.
This includes both international schools and London schools, state and private, which has helped me to understand the needs of the widest range of student interests and abilities. I've enjoyed working with Oxbridge candidates and EAL learners equally: each have their own capacity to challenge - and to be challenged.
At all stages of my career I've worked hard to understand how teaching and planning can best effect learning: I've worked on curriculum design in schools from Buenos Aires to Hampstead and Suffolk, planning schemes of work and lessons from IB Literature to KS3 English and Common Entrance.
Throughout I've had the good fortune to collaborate with excellent teaching colleagues who have contributed to my understanding of best practise, and whose methods I continue to use in my tutoring.
I'm an English specialist who recognises that the best resources for teaching are the books which continue to captivate young people, given the right tools and the right access. This and students themselves, whose ideas and skills never cease to amaze and captivate me. From my first job in a London state school I have learned not to rely on didactic teaching methods but rather to draw on the energy and curiosity of the learner, and to motivate students with structured teaching that challenges and engages.
